Maurice River Committee backs NJDOT bridge work, approves grant applications and supports recreation funding

Maurice River Township’s committee on Jan. 16 approved a consent agenda that included support for New Jersey Department of Transportation work on the Route 47 bridge over the Menantico Creek and authorization to submit grant applications for roadway and recreation projects.
Resolution No. 34-2025 records the township’s support for NJDOT’s proposed improvements to the Route 47 (Menantico Creek) bridge, which the resolution says NJDOT has deemed structurally deficient with substructure and superstructure condition concerns; NJDOT proposes a construction start date in summer 2025. The resolution notes the route’s role in coastal evacuation and the township said it will forward a certified copy to NJDOT.
The committee also approved Resolution No. 33-2025 authorizing submission of a grant application and execution of a grant contract with NJDOT for "Main Street (Route 616) Raising" (LFIF-2025-MAURICE RIVER TOWNSHIP MAIN STREET-00046). Separately, Resolution No. 42-2025 authorizes applying for a New Jersey Department of Community Affairs Local Recreation Improvement Grant for approximately $98,800 to install playground equipment at Leesburg Recreation Park; the resolution states the township recognizes that the department may award a lesser or greater amount.
Mayor Ken Whildin reported that a private contractor, ALS, intends to place roughly 45,000 tons of sand at Thompsons Beach for replenishment, and that Route 47 will be closed near the Menantico Bridge during replacement work; the committee said it will communicate specifics to residents when available.
All consent-agenda items were approved by single motion (Deputy Mayor Joe Sterling moved; Committeeman Ben Stowman seconded) on a unanimous roll call vote.
Next steps: the township will submit the NJDOT and DCA grant applications as authorized, coordinate with NJDOT on bridge timelines and notify residents about Route 47 closures once schedules are confirmed.
