Union County School Board members received district enrollment and staff retention reports and approved multiple student travel requests.
Dr. Bird presented a beginning‑of‑year enrollment snapshot pulled Aug. 15 showing total district enrollment at 3,550, a decline of 51 students compared with the prior year; Union County High School enrollment was reported at 992, a decrease of 36 students. Dr. Bird cautioned that counts can fluctuate daily as students enroll or withdraw.
In the superintendent's informational segment, staff reported 302 certified positions at the end of the 2024–25 school year and 23 certified separations: 16 employees left the district, two involved breaches of contract and five were retirements. The board had previously set a 90% retention target for certified personnel (excluding retirees); staff reported a 92% retention rate for 2024–25.
The board also reviewed and unanimously approved several field trip requests. Those approvals included seasonal athletics and safety documentation for a South Carolina Bass Nation Youth Series tournament (Sept. 27–April 18) with insurance requirements for boat captains, and overnight trips for Sims Middle School: a seventh‑grade trip to Atlanta (including Georgia Tech and Blue Ridge activities) and an eighth‑grade educational trip to Washington, D.C., with museum visits and a U.S. Capitol tour. Staff said fundraising and payment plans would be available and some federal funds were set aside to assist eligible students.
Finance and operations staff presented July year‑to‑date financials showing roughly $2.1 million in revenues and $1.2 million in expenditures for the month, leaving a net operating result for July of about $868,000; staff noted cash flow could tighten next month as additional funding is received on a staggered schedule.
The meeting concluded with routine adjournment.
