Union County School Board approves bonuses, contracts, capital amendment and AVID program

The Union County School Board on Thursday approved a series of personnel and procurement actions, a mid-year capital amendment and the district’s adoption of the AVID program at Sims Middle School.
The board voted, by roll call, to approve the superintendent’s recommendation to provide holiday bonuses for district employees and accepted the December personnel report. No amount for the holiday bonus is recorded in the meeting transcript.
On procurement, the board awarded the food-service kitchen-equipment preventive-maintenance and repair contract to JES Equipment Sales and Service of Aville, South Carolina, after staff said the vendor submitted the highest score and offered the lowest hourly rate of $85. The board also approved a recommended extension of the custodial contract with Bud Group for the 2026–27 school year.
Trustees approved two overnight field trips for the high-school wrestling team (Jan. 9–10 to Columbia and Feb. 20–21 for the high-school league championship) and moved to dispose of a parent complaint after finding no merit; a trustee indicated a recusal/abstention during the roll call for that item.
On finance and facilities, staff presented the November financial report showing year-to-date revenues of $11.7 million and year-to-date expenditures of $14.3 million, producing a net operating result of –$2.5 million for November; staff said additional revenues typically arrive in January. The board approved a capital-project amendment to add $540,000 to extend the capital budget through June 30, 2026. Staff identified three projects the amendment will cover: replacement of a gym floor and graphics, Sims Middle School resurfacing and striping, and additional summer maintenance; the money will come from the district’s annual capital-bond receipts.
In program approvals, the board voted to implement AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) at Sims Middle School. The principal told trustees the district will begin with a related-arts course, track cohorts and measure outcomes with annual data (including SC Ready and cohort graduation/credit indicators) and that the program will be supported with Title I funds.
