Canton reports progress on lead‑service application, fiber project and street surveys; sewer plant AC flagged for replacement

City staff provided updates May 14 on several infrastructure and community projects, including a lead‑service‑line grant application, a planned residential fiber rollout, street design work and ballfield improvements.

Clerk Anne Koliha said engineering firm WHKS submitted Canton’s lead‑service‑line project priority list application to the Minnesota Department of Health; if the city’s application appears on the Intended Use Plan, the city can pursue funds to prepare specifications and replace lead and galvanized service lines. Koliha also said Acentek technicians will contact property owners as part of a fiber‑optic project planned for completion in 2025.

Public Works reporter Jon Nordsving said most surveying for the street project is finished and engineers will begin design work; he reported the ballfield infield work is complete after 11 loads of sand were brought in and graded by Tom Davis. Nordsving said the sewer‑plant air conditioner needs repair or replacement and recommended considering a mini‑split heat‑pump unit to improve heating efficiency in colder months. He also reported the town warning siren has been repaired and is operational. Deputy Clerk Barb Kerns noted residents may request changes to garbage tote sizes, with a $25 transfer charge assessed by Richard's Sanitation.

The council acknowledged these administrative and capital‑planning updates and agreed staff will continue project preparations and contractor coordination.
