Council extends deadline for Mitson House removals after society reports interior damage

The Canton City Council voted May 14 to extend the deadline for the Canton Historical Society to remove items from the Mitson House until July 1. Clerk Anne Koliha told the council the society is packing items it wishes to keep and has secured temporary rental storage from Tim Fossum.
Koliha said she inspected the property after the society reported damage inside the house from an animal; she shared photos of broken window framing consistent with an animal attempting to exit. The council approved the one‑month extension on a motion by Councilmember Jason Magnuson, seconded by Councilmember Jen Dowling. The motion carried.
The extension gives the society more time to clear salvageable historic items and move them into the secured rental area. The council did not record additional conditions tied to the extension; the clerk will follow up as items are removed.
