Canton council directs clerk to seek bids and buyers after Mitson House deadline passes

On July 9, 2025, the Canton City Council agreed to pursue options for removing the vacant Mitson House after the Canton Historical Society failed to meet a deadline to remove items from the property. Clerk Anne Koliha told the council that electrical service to the house has been disconnected and the society’s removal window has expired.
Clerk Anne Koliha said she will contact Todd Johnson of Rustique Collections to determine whether the business is interested in any remaining items and will obtain contractor estimates for tearing down the structure and leveling the lot. Councilmembers consented to the outreach and to soliciting demolition estimates but did not authorize immediate demolition funding or a contract at the meeting.
The matter remains at an early administrative stage: the council’s action was limited to directing staff to explore options and collect information. Any decision to contract for demolition or dispose of items will return to the council for formal authorization once estimates and proposals are received.
