Dr. Latia Staggers, executive director for professional development and instructional support, presented two proposed 2026–27 calendar options to the Williamsburg County School District Board of Trustees and explained how each meets South Carolina legal requirements.
Dr. Staggers said state law requires a 190‑day school term with 180 instructional days and a minimum nine‑month school year, and that districts implementing a modified year‑round calendar may be exempt from the prohibition on starting before the third Monday in August. She described two calendar options: Calendar A places spring break before Easter (March 22–29, 2027) and Calendar B places it after Easter.
Key dates Dr. Staggers listed include a teacher work year of July 23, 2026 to June 2, 2027 and student days from August 1, 2026 to May 28, 2027. The district must include 10 professional development days (three collegiate PD days per Section 59‑18‑300, up to two pre‑school preparation days and five planning/parent‑office days), three mandatory inclement‑weather makeup days and three required half days. Because Williamsburg County is designated an e‑learning district, the presentation noted e‑learning days may be used for some inclement‑weather closures.
"Our voice is important in this survey," Dr. Staggers said, announcing the district will run an anonymous community survey from February 24 through March 7 to collect feedback. The survey will be shared via district email, PowerSchool notifications, the district website and hard copies available at school front offices.
Board members asked for clarification about the early spring break dates; Dr. Staggers explained the timing is tied to how Easter falls on the calendar in 2027 and that intersession weeks and other student supports remain consistent between the two options. No formal action to adopt a calendar was taken at the meeting; the presentation and the scheduled survey are the next steps in the process.
