Board approves turnaround plan for Greenville STEAM Academy

The Williamsburg County School District Board unanimously approved a continuous improvement/turnaround plan for Greenville STEAM Academy at its Jan. 29 meeting.
GSA Principal Miss Murray presented student performance data and an intervention plan to trustees. She reported that third-grade ELA proficiency was 30% meets/exceeds and fourth-grade ELA 63.2%; third-grade SC Ready math was 42.5% and fourth grade 47.4%. Principal Murray said those fourth-grade math results represented a decline from a prior-year level she cited around 73% for a similar cohort and attributed part of the decline to teacher-quality issues and noncontinuous enrollment affecting progress-point calculations.
To address gaps, the principal described a three-tiered approach: tier-one supports with instructional coaches in classrooms (described as in-class support about 85% of the time), common formative assessments and strengthened PLCs; tier-two small-group acceleration and after-school support through a 21st Century program; and tier-three intensive pull-out interventions and targeted literacy programs. The school also scheduled two days of intensive instruction from 8:00 to 8:45 each morning and biweekly progress monitoring.
Board members asked about parent engagement in scholars' instruction; Miss Murray said teachers communicate weekly and that RTI processes include written notices and invitations for in-person meetings. After discussion, a motion to approve the plan was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Board members expressed support for the plan and urged continued monitoring and follow-up.
