Norton City board approves routine personnel and policy items, moves into executive session on negotiations

The Norton City Board of Education moved through routine business and approved a series of motions, typically on unanimous roll-call votes.

The board approved a corrected agenda (removal of one item) and then approved a policy on reading skills assessment and third-grade reading guarantee language (IGBEA-r, attachment A). Minutes from the regular meeting of June 24, 2024, were approved. The board also approved treasurer recommendations (letters A–D), multiple personnel actions including retirements, resignations and one-year certified contracts (pending background checks and permits), and the creation of four classified educational assistant positions.

A revised resolution to eliminate positions and abolish certain posts owing to a decline in student enrollment was approved; the resolution cites the negotiated agreement between the Norton Board of Education and OPC local number 167 and Ohio Revised Code sections 3319.17 and 3319.172.

The board approved the consent agenda (multiple items) and acknowledged an anonymous donation used to purchase school supplies distributed during the Panther's Closet open house.

By unanimous roll call the board then voted to enter executive session to discuss the employment of a public employee and to prepare for negotiations concerning compensation and other terms and conditions of employment.
