Jones County Board of Assessors approves homestead and appeals lists; resident praises new assessments

Jones County Board of Assessors members met on July 2 and approved a set of routine assessor items, including two homestead applications, one ACO recommendation, 24 motor vehicle appeals and nine previously tabled Cuva flipper applications. The meeting opened at about 5:00 p.m. and was adjourned after completing the agenda.
The board first approved the meeting agenda and then moved to accept the minutes from the June 12 meeting. Staff circulated the documents in advance and recommended approval of the lists before the board voted to adopt them.

Staff updates and appeals: The assessor’s office reported it sent appeal notices Monday and said the last day to file an appeal is August 13; the office had received four appeals as of the meeting. No project updates requiring board action were reported.
Public comment: During the public comment period a resident praised the recently released assessments for aligning closely with fair market values across their investment properties on Overland Way, saying, “they're so close to being exactly a fair market value … if I was going to sell them today, that's what they had priced for.” The resident added they still see some industrial areas that need additional review and urged the board to examine those valuations.
Other remarks: The board expressed condolences to the McMichael and Wallston families. A participant named Jade led a prayer that thanked staff and noted the county's chief appraiser. Board members also thanked a recently hired staff member for work since starting two weeks earlier.
The board moved to adjourn after completing the listed items and the meeting ended shortly thereafter. No votes were postponed and no ordinance or resolution was introduced at this meeting.
