Silver Creek Township approves wage increase, accepts Xcel sirens and OKs computer upgrade

Silver Creek Township’s Board of Supervisors took a series of routine yet consequential actions at its Sept. 17, 2024 meeting, voting to increase a maintenance employee’s wage, accept donated emergency sirens, pursue a gravel-pit contract extension and move forward on new computer equipment.
Chairman Mike Helman opened the meeting at 7 p.m. The board unanimously approved the evening’s agenda after Supervisor Ryan Nelson moved to add hall flooring to New Business and Supervisor Andy Christensen seconded.
The board approved claims presented for payment and received the Clerk-Treasurer report from Alana Paumen, who listed fund balances across General ($127,542.29), Contingency ($9,646.46), Road & Bridge ($403,014.54), Fire ($55,099.86), ARPA ($13,772.51) and Checking ($24,708.69). Paumen also noted the township attorney will raise hourly rates to $275/$300 and staff is working with the county to finalize parcel counts used to calculate fire fees.
On Old Business, Supervisor Ryan Nelson moved to accept two sirens offered as a donation by Xcel Energy; Chairman Helman seconded and the motion carried, 3-0. The minutes record that the Monticello Fire Contract is fully executed between the City of Monticello and the township.
Also under Old Business, Chairman Mike Helman moved to accept Northstar Technologies’ quote to purchase computer equipment for up to $12,000; Nelson seconded. Supervisor Andy Christensen abstained due to a conflict of interest; the motion carried 2-0.
Under New Business the board approved a $1-per-hour wage increase for the maintenance employee, bringing the hourly rate to $33 after a motion by Christensen and a second from Nelson; the vote was 3-0. The board also authorized initiating discussions with the gravel-pit owners about extending or continuing the township’s gravel contract, following a motion by Nelson that carried 3-0. Chairman Helman moved to allow up to $300 for two maintenance employees to attend chainsaw training on Nov. 13 in Maple Lake Township; that motion carried 3-0.
The minutes note an audit update: a meeting among the CPA, Chairman Helman, Clerk-Treasurer Paumen and Nancy was scheduled and audit materials must be provided to the CPA by Sept. 30.
The board adjourned after a recorded closed meeting; the minutes do not include details of that closed session.
