Board approves claims, adopts payroll direct deposit and flags vendor email scam; reviews maintenance work

At its Sept. 3 meeting, the Silver Creek Township Board approved routine financial and administrative items and reviewed maintenance and an apparent vendor scam.
On motions by Vice Chairman Brandon Geyen, seconded by Supervisor Ryan Nelson, the board approved the list of claims and disbursements and separately approved implementing payroll direct deposit; both motions were recorded as carried 4-0.
The clerk reported receiving an email that appeared to be from Thielen Excavating requesting payment by wire transfer. After checking township records and contacting Thielen Excavating directly, the board determined the email was a scam and that there were no outstanding invoices with that vendor.
The board reviewed a vendor quote for a new office computer and directed staff to obtain a second quote; Geyen recommended adding laptops for supervisors to the request. The board also scheduled discussion of proposed projects and the budget for the Oct. 1, 2024 meeting.
In the maintenance report, staff said full right-of-way ditch mowing is in progress, ditch cleaning on Baker Avenue is scheduled as a 2–3 day project this week, and shouldering is nearly completed.
Separately, in old business the board read a note from Mr. Haack about his property; the board made it clear township maintenance and equipment are not available for hire and Supervisor Ryan Nelson provided Mr. Haack with contact information for a local contractor. Maintenance staff, Geyen and Mr. Haack arranged to meet on site to discuss expectations for beginning compliance with township ordinances.
