Lancaster County approves $1.09 million juvenile-services grant amid funding cuts

Lancaster County commissioners voted to accept a $1,091,224 Community Based Juvenile Service Aid Enhancement Grant for fiscal year 2027 from the Nebraska Crime Commission to fund juvenile diversion programs and community partners.
Leslie Earnest of Lincoln Lancaster County Human Services told the board the grant "is the grant that we receive every year to help fund our juvenile programs and diversion. It funds many of our community partners who augment the important work that we do in juvenile diversion." Earnest and commissioners noted the award is smaller than in past years: "I believe it's less. There was a significant cut in funding for both community based aid and juvenile services," Earnest said.
During questions, staff clarified the funding source appears to be state funding administered through the Nebraska Crime Commission. The board moved, seconded and approved acceptance of the grant by roll call.
Next steps: county human-services staff will adjust program budgets to reflect the reduced award and continue administering funds through partner organizations.
