The Stillwater Township Board of Education voted on Dec. 15, 2025 to decline a proposal from Parette Somjen Architects to begin professional services for a boiler replacement in the school’s 1941/1956 building sections. Board members said they want additional comparable quotes before committing to the $65,000 proposal.
Business Administrator/Board Secretary René Metzgar presented the project background and an architect proposal and explained that the resolution included a submission to the New Jersey Department of Education and an amendment to the district’s Long Range Facilities Plan. The draft resolution had stated the district would not seek state funding and planned to fund the work from Capital Reserve, but the motions authorizing the architect contract and DOE submission failed on the roll call vote.
Board members approved the building and use calendar that was bundled with the facilities motions, but rejected motions to hire Parette Somjen Architects and to authorize related DOE paperwork after discussing the architect’s costs. The board recorded discussion requesting comparable quotes prior to selecting an architect.
No formal change to the district’s funding plan or timeline was approved at the meeting. After a brief executive session on student privacy, the board reconvened and clarified that additional architect proposals will be solicited before reconsidering the boiler project contract. No timeline for a re-vote was set at the meeting.
