KEDC to bring free private-well assessments to Kodiak; resident raises data-center concerns

Melissa Shoneweather, executive director of the Kodiak Economic Development Corporation, told the assembly that KEDC is partnering with the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) to provide no-cost private well assessments in Kodiak on August 12 and 13. Services will include individual well assessments, water-sample testing for common indicators, a written report with recommendations, a well-owner resource packet, and follow-up technical assistance. RCAC estimates the service value at about $750 per household; assessment slots are limited to roughly eight homes per day and a wait list will be formed if needed. In an unrelated comment, caller Carly Mcchznney expressed concern about data centers and their potential to consume large amounts of water and electricity, noting potential impacts on local rates and infrastructure. "It almost feels like it's being forced on us in Kodiak...I don't want to see us have to ration water or have the ratepayers pay tremendous electric bills," she said, urging caution and research over time.
The assembly accepted the public comment items; staff did not announce any immediate policy action tied to the data-center concerns during this meeting.
