Council adopts salary ordinance and introduces measures on vaping sales, boards and road bonds

At its Jan. 21 meeting the South Plainfield Borough Council gave final adoption to Ordinance 2335, an amendment to the borough salary ordinance that adds and adjusts nonunion professional positions for 2024–2028. The roll call for final adoption recorded five affirmative votes: Councilman Bena, Councilwoman Postini, Councilwoman M, Councilman Smith and Council President White.

The council also introduced four ordinances for first reading:

• Ordinance 2336 would create a new borough chapter regulating the sale of electronic smoking devices and products; council discussion and roll call showed at least three affirmative votes with at least one recorded no and one abstention during the introduction vote, and the ordinance was introduced for first reading.

• Ordinance 2337 would amend chapter 17 relating to boards, committees and commissions; introduction passed on roll call.

• Ordinance 2338 would appropriate $650,000 and authorize bonds or notes to fund improvements to South Plainfield Avenue, Veil Court and other borough roads; introduction passed on roll call.

• Ordinance 2339 would appropriate $500,000 and authorize bonds or notes to finance reconstruction improvements to Hy Road and related infrastructure; introduction passed on roll call.

Why it matters: Ord. 2335 affects borough compensation schedules for nonunion professionals; the bond ordinances (2338 and 2339) commit the borough to future capital borrowing to finance road work. Ordinance 2336 signals local regulation of vaping‑product sales.

Next steps: Ordinance 2335 is adopted and effective per borough procedures; the introduced ordinances (2336–2339) move to subsequent readings as required by borough code before final adoption.
