Union City council removes lien, approves canoe launch contract and funds for local grants

The Union City Borough Council unanimously approved several local actions at its Aug. 27 meeting, including removal of a borough lien, acceptance of a contract quote for a canoe/kayak launch and approval of Renaissance grant awards intended to address blight.
Manager Cindy Wells told council the borough holds a lien of about $2,690 on 121 East High Street, a property donated to the Erie County Land Bank; the Land Bank asked that the lien be removed, and council voted to remove/satisfy the lien for the full amount.
Council reviewed quotes for a canoe and kayak launch at the American Legion ball field and accepted a $16,679 quote from Construction Services of PA. Wells said the project cost was below the $23,200 bidding threshold, so formal competitive bids were not required; the contract acceptance was made contingent on receipt of an easement from the American Legion.
On Renaissance grants, Wells said seven applications were received totaling $60,606 in project costs and requesting $23,600 in grant funds; she said $90,547.35 remains in the Renaissance Grant fund. Council approved the seven recommended awards.
Council also passed a resolution accepting the Erie Area Council of Government audit report, as requested by COG members.
All motions noted in the minutes carried unanimously. The canoe/kayak installation will proceed once the easement condition is satisfied and staff carries out the contract steps approved by council.
