Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a candidate the council had approved at a prior meeting has not responded to outreach and ‘‘he has tried to make contact but has had no luck. He is assuming he is no longer interested,’’ Pernice said.
Pernice said the borough’s consortium list currently contains 32 candidates and that he would reach back out to the consortium, send letters and consult the Civil Service Commission to set up oral examinations. He reiterated that his preference is to staff two part-time officers but noted the council had authorized only one new hire at this time.
Councilors present — Joyce, Osborn, Steadman and Kerns — agreed to proceed with recruitment for one part-time officer. Pernice said he would follow up with the Civil Service Commission and return with the schedule for exams and next steps.
The update came during routine business at the Aug. 27 meeting held at First Global Methodist Church. No formal amendment to staffing levels or funding was made during the meeting; council action was limited to directing staff to continue the hiring process.
