Union City council votes to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation and reviews several admin items

Union City Council on July 9 authorized staff to move forward with a public meeting and a resolution to pursue a Broadband Ready Communities designation through the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG).
Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the designation would "create an opportunity for other ISPs to come into the Borough creating other options for residents," and council voted unanimously to proceed with the process and public meeting. The resolution would authorize EACOG to serve as the borough's municipal broadband champion for the application process.
Council also agreed to use WRA, LLP as the engineer for follow-up work on a school-crossing feasibility study and was notified that the TA Set-Aside sidewalk project will begin July 15. Other administrative items included scheduling a virtual South County EMS study meeting for July 11, an ECBA meeting on July 17, and a July 30 presentation of health insurance plan options to council members.
On zoning, council discussed prior changes related to skill games of chance and considered allowing above-ground pools on adjoining vacant lots and removable sheds up to 144 square feet on gravel bases or skids without adjacent-property setbacks; Solicitor Tim Wachter will draft suggested amendments for council review. The Street Supervisor was asked to calculate angled parking capacity for Municipal Lot #2 as council considers removing front-end parking there.
Council voted unanimously to adopt the procedural steps to pursue broadband readiness and requested staff return with draft ordinance language on parking and zoning changes.
