Port Clinton Tree Commission approves removal of two hazardous street trees, outlines replacement plans

The Port Clinton Tree Commission on Sept. 9, 2025 unanimously approved removing two hazardous street trees and discussed plans to replace trees lost this year in Lakeview Park.

Commissioner Larry Holman reported that six trees in Lakeview Park have been removed and that a new tree was recently planted at the Senior Center. Holman said he is waiting for the City Safety Service director to select a replacement tree for Lakeview Park and thanked Commissioner Lisa Bodi for watering downtown flowers and taking minutes at meetings.

On new business, the commission considered a request to remove an older spruce at 208 Adams St., which Holman described as leaning with dead limbs. Commissioner Jerry Tarolli moved to remove the tree; Commissioner Ed Urban seconded the motion. The motion passed with all five commissioners present voting in favor (Larry Holman, Roger Domokos, Lisa Bodi, Jerry Tarolli and Ed Urban).

The commission also voted to remove a large silver maple at 113 Hayes that commissioners said has outgrown its space, is seeping sap, has loose bark and signs of fungus, and leans. Tarolli moved for removal and Bodi seconded; the motion was approved unanimously.

During discussion of replacement plantings, commissioners noted a damaged young tree in Lakeview Park and a large open area left by the loss of six trees. Holman said the Rotary may donate two trees for next year’s Arbor Day and suggested inviting Stephanie Miller to help with tree selection.

There was no public comment. The commission scheduled its next meeting for Oct. 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Jerry Tarolli moved to adjourn; Ed Urban seconded and the meeting was adjourned.

Actions recorded at the meeting included the approval of removals at 208 Adams St. and 113 Hayes, and setting the next regular meeting date.
