Redevelopment commission raises grant pool, approves Maryville scope change to indoor distribution cabinets
Summary
The Hobart Redevelopment Commission voted to raise its 2027 education and workforce training grant pool from $30,000 to $50,000 and approved a requested scope change from Maryville High School to build eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets instead of outdoor pantry boxes, citing reduced spoilage and liability.

The Hobart City Redevelopment Commission voted Monday to increase the amount available for its 2027 education and workforce training grants from $30,000 to $50,000 and to approve a scope revision for a Maryville High School construction-trades project.
During the packet update, staff member Miguel summarized communications from Maryville representatives and introduced a letter describing obstacles the school faced installing outdoor pantry boxes. A presenter read the letter, which said the project would instead design and install eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets — one for each named community school — to protect donated food from weather and vandalism and to allow staff to manage inventory. The letter was signed by Terrell Taylor, construction trades instructor at Maryville High School.
Commissioners were told the change does not increase the project budget and that the revised approach preserves the program’s hands-on workforce-training goals. Staff described benefits including better monitoring of distributions, reduced food spoilage, and inclusion of hygiene and clothing items not covered by programs such as WIC.
Chair moved to approve both the increase in the RDC’s 2027 grant pool and the Maryville scope revision. Both motions were seconded and approved on voice vote.
The commission’s action formalizes the board’s earlier recommendation to increase grant funds and allows Maryville to proceed under the revised, indoor design. Staff said the project will be completed within the originally approved budget and that the cabinets will become resources for students and families.
Next steps: staff will document the approved scope change in the grant file and proceed with project oversight under existing grant terms.
