Athens commission tables battery energy storage zoning amendment after residents raise environmental concerns

City Planner Ronda Cockerham presented the draft definition and a zoning map indicating which districts would be affected. Chairperson Brian Schutt opened the public hearing; residents McKenzie Brown and Anne Perryman spoke in opposition, citing concerns about environmental impacts.
Commissioners discussed environmental issues and other concerns raised during public comment. After discussion, Chairperson Brian Schutt moved to table the item; Member Von Thomas seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. No ordinance was adopted or finalized at the meeting.
Because the proposal was tabled, commissioners did not take additional votes to change permitted districts or adopt technical standards. The item remains pending and may be brought back for additional study or revised language at a future meeting.
