Board amends 2024–25 calendar to make up weather-related closures; safety equipment purchases discussed

The board approved an amendment to the 2024–25 academic calendar to make up days missed during fall weather events and heard a separate safety update.
The superintendent said state law requires making up three missed school days and proposed a three‑part plan: designate a Friday as an e‑learning day so families on vacation could still participate; convert two scheduled half days into full school days on Wednesday and Thursday, May 21–22; and use the already scheduled half day on Friday, May 23 as the third makeup increment. "What I am proposing ... is that Friday 18th ... be an e‑learning day ... and then ... full days of school scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday May 21st and 22nd ... and a half day on Friday May 23rd," the superintendent said. The board then moved to amend the calendar; Mr Neil moved the motion, a second was made, and the board voted in favor by voice/hand.
On safety, Dr Wilson and staff described continued use of rotating open‑gate metal detectors at high schools with positive feedback and noted settlement funding will allow the district to purchase additional equipment without drawing on general funds. The update also referenced coordination with the career center to increase on‑campus security staffing and indicated the board would consider a clear‑bag policy for athletic events in coming months.
Board approval of the calendar amendment included asking the board to forgive Friday, Oct. 4 (the fourth missed day) if the makeup plan is implemented; staff said they will finalize calendar details and communicate changes to families.
