Board reviews multiple policy updates on first reading, including parental-notification rule and Narcan for life-saving medication

Dr. Wilson presented several policy updates on first reading March 25, explaining that the state has required or revised guidance in multiple areas and that the district is updating its policy manual accordingly.
He summarized a new state-required policy (listed as JBAC in staff materials) that directs staff not to withhold information from parents about a child's asserted gender when it conflicts with biological sex and instructs staff to notify building principals, who must then notify parents in writing when a minor student asserts that a staff member referred to the student by a gender inconsistent with biological sex. "We're doing this because it is required by law," Dr. Wilson said, adding that administrators have historically handled such situations directly with parents.
Dr. Wilson also reviewed changes to weapons-in-school language that add items specified in state law (for example, certain blades, metal knuckles and similar instruments) and clarified alternative-school placement options for serious incidents. Staff noted one proviso in the state language would be corrected in a future legislative action.
On student health and safety, the board heard that some administrative rules moved into policy and that the district updated guidance for individual health-care plans and student self-monitoring (for example, allowing some students to self-monitor devices like glucose monitors). Dr. Wilson said the life-saving medication policy (JLCDB) was updated to explicitly allow administration in emergencies of epinephrine inhalers and Narcan spray; he noted nurses are provided Narcan and the addition intends to allow life-saving treatment without subsequent liability for the administrator acting in good faith.
These proposals were presented for first reading; board members were invited to submit questions before a subsequent meeting where the board may act on the policies.
