Athens OKs park master-plan work and accepts bilingual playground communication board donation

The Athens City Council on Jan. 12 approved a Phase 1 professional-services agreement with Ron Hobbs Architect for improvements at O.D. Baggett Park and accepted a donated bilingual and sign-language Playground Communication Board for Kiwanis Park.
City Manager Elizabeth Borstad explained the Phase 1 work would rotate an existing softball field and add pavement for parking. She said the city would perform much of the work and that the professional-services agreement is for $48,000, not to exceed $50,000. Councilwoman SyTanna Freeman moved to approve the resolution authorizing the City Manager to enter the agreement; Councilmember Bryan Barker seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Jennifer Browning, Executive Director of the Greater Athens Chamber of Commerce, presented the Leadership Class of 2025’s donation of a Playground Communication Board for Kiwanis Park. The board will display pictures and terms in English and Spanish and include sign-language references; the class donated the board in honor of a classmate, Zach Puley. The city will assist with maintenance. Council accepted the donation by resolution.
