Council approves temporary 'tennis only' sign at Rainier Trails Park after neighbors complain of noise and parking

Council member (speaker 5) moved the motion, citing committee agreement on proposed sign placement; the motion was seconded. Council members raised concerns about parking impacts, noise, porta-potty availability and whether a non-codified sign would create an expectation of enforcement. Staff and other council members noted the city lacks a sign code that would make the sign enforceable and that any enforceable restriction would require a separate regulatory process.
Council agreed a temporary, instructive sign would be posted quickly and reevaluated; staff said they could create verbiage that welcomes people while encouraging use of alternative courts and could reach out to pickleball organizers about prior striping costs. The motion to place a temporary sign passed by voice vote.
