The Des Moines City Council on May 18 approved an amendment to memorialize consistent operating hours for the downtown Hy‑Vee, restoring and standardizing the store schedule in recognition of increased downtown residential customers.
Councilmember Mandelbaum said the change adds a few hours back into the agreement and will improve service for nearby residents. "We're seeing the benefits of the downtown grocery store. Both to the residents and Hy‑Vee itself," Mandelbaum said, praising Hy‑Vee’s outreach to new downtown residents.
The council voted 7-0 to adopt the amendment. Mandelbaum said that with more customers from nearby developments, the council could revisit hours in a couple of years to explore possible further expansion.
Next steps: the amendment was adopted by council vote and staff will proceed to implement the updated operating-hours agreement with Hy‑Vee.
