State paving on Route 41 prompts town to revise traffic‑calming plan, add crosswalks and signs

The Sharon Board of Selectmen discussed June 9 how an upcoming state paving project on Route 41 might affect town plans for traffic calming near the shopping center.
Selectman John Hecht asked whether the August paving would interfere with the town’s proposed traffic-calming installations. First Selectman Flanagan said the town engineer submitted conceptual plans to the Department of Transportation, but the State appears to be applying a conflicting policy: traffic‑calming treatments previously installed in Salisbury are now regarded as impermissible. Given that, Flanagan said the town’s current concept focuses on improving pedestrian safety with better crosswalks (including one by the post office equipped with signage and a flashing light), adding a crosswalk by Extra Mart, and possibly installing electronic enforcement cameras. He also said West Main Street’s one-hour parking will not be altered by the State.
Flanagan said he would follow up with the COG Main Street Group for feedback on locations the group previously reviewed. No formal vote was taken; the discussion was to guide staff coordination with DOT and the COG.
