Board tables Building Official and Fire Marshal appointments, schedules special meeting for June 11

The Sharon Board of Selectmen on June 9 tabled decisions on hiring for the Building Official and Fire Marshal posts and scheduled a special meeting for Friday, June 11 at 11 a.m. to allow time for the State to respond to a certification challenge.
Board members said multiple candidates applied for the Fire Marshal position; two candidates applied for both the Fire Marshal and Building Official positions. For the Building Official vacancy one candidate is fully certified; a second has applied to "challenge" taking the certification test based on prior qualifications and experience. First Selectman Flanagan said he contacted the State and was told the challenge is under review; if the challenge is granted the applicant would have 90 days to take the test and await results.
After discussion, Mr. Brett moved to table the hiring decision and set a special meeting for June 11 at 11 a.m.; Ms. Kearcher seconded the motion, and the board approved it unanimously. Because the Fire Marshal remains unfilled, Ms. Kearcher moved (Mr. Brett second) to table appointments for Deputy Fire Marshals as well; that motion carried unanimously.
The board did not make any appointments at the June 9 meeting; they plan to reconvene at the special meeting to act if the State issues guidance on the certification challenge.
