Chair Bonny Rathbone called the Palmer School Committee to order on Jan. 21. The committee approved a slate of routine items affecting students and district operations, voting on field trips, personnel descriptions, policy housekeeping, school choice seats and grants.
The most consequential votes were procedural approvals required to move district business forward. The committee unanimously approved an out‑of‑state, overnight field trip for grade 8 to Washington, D.C., scheduled for June 1–4, 2027. The transcript records the motion and a unanimous 5‑0 vote.
The committee also approved a new job description titled Student Worker — Cafeteria Sanitation Assistants. Superintendent Matthew Francis said 255 students would be eligible and that students must be at least 16 and complete required paperwork. "This has been done before but there has not been an official job description until now," Francis said. The motion passed 5‑0.
Superintendent Francis recommended removing several outdated or procedural policies from Section E of the Palmer Policy Manual (listed in the packet as EB‑R; EBC‑R‑1; EBC‑R‑2; EC; ECAC‑R; EEBA; EEBA‑R‑1). The committee voted to remove the referenced policies to streamline the manual. The motion passed unanimously (5‑0).
On School Choice, the committee approved Palmer Public Schools as a School Choice district for FY27 and authorized a total of 35 seats across grades. Members discussed grade‑level seat counts and noted that the number submitted to the state must be final by April 1. The motion passed 5‑0.
The committee accepted PCC Grants totaling $8,021; the minutes note a clerical correction that the grant for the music program should read "Beginning Band Program." That motion passed 5‑0.
Finally, the second reading of the district Wellness Policy was approved; Ms. Noonan asked whether implementation would be immediate, and Superintendent Francis said a committee must be established first before the policy takes effect. The motion passed 5‑0.
