The superintendent presented the district’s quarter-two financial update (through Dec. 31) at the March 5 Rockport School Committee meeting, reporting the district absorbed approximately $84,000 in unanticipated capital and maintenance expenses this fiscal year. Those expenses included classroom flooring repairs, playground equipment fixes, a gym fire-alarm repair, an irrigation pump replacement and repairs for music-room leaks; the district paid for an assessment of roof leaks and the town has offered to cover the eventual roof replacement.
Despite the outlays, administrators said the operating budget remains on track and estimated reserves of about $1.9 million—after anticipated year-end adjustments—leave the district in a healthy position for this point in the fiscal year. Officials said the district absorbed some capital costs proactively to avoid emergency town requests and that continued conservative budgeting has helped maintain financial flexibility.
Committee members asked whether unspent operating lines can be shifted to capital at year-end; administrators replied that while it is possible, the committee should weigh maintaining reserve levels against using one-time funds for capital projects. No additional fiscal actions were taken at the meeting.
