The Rockport School Committee voted on Oct. 13 to form a communication and advocacy subcommittee to develop a district newsletter, postcard outreach and other engagement tools ahead of the winter-spring budget season.
Committee members reviewed three sample newsletter formats and a proposed "coming soon" postcard to be mailed to households and businesses. The committee discussed a multi-channel strategy including in-person listening sessions, road shows at local events, printed and digital materials, and targeted outreach to key community ambassadors.
Nicole Alter and other members said the goal is to increase transparency about district finances and programming and to build community support ahead of future budget asks. "Itis important that every single thing we send out always has a date on it," a member said during discussion about formatting and distribution.
Amy Oaks and Jessica Delisi were recommended to serve on the subcommittee; a motion to appoint both was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. The chair said the office will follow up by email to the new subcommittee and that subcommittee members will work with central office staff (Lori) to finalize the design and timeline for the first publication.
Committee members emphasized accessibility (larger type for older residents), varied delivery formats, and a plan to report back what the committee hears from listening sessions. The committee also said it expects the subcommittee to coordinate closely with the planned budget outreach and road show in February and March.
The committee did not set a publication budget at the meeting but said the initial model anticipates covering production costs through local advertising; committee members asked staff to return with costed design options and an implementation timeline.
