The Bamberg County School District Board of Trustees approved a revision to policy ECA on March 3, adding language that drones operated on district property must be flown by licensed FAA-certified pilots or under the supervision of such a pilot.
The change was proposed after board members pointed out wording conflicts between subsections and asked whether the policy should specify an age limit for student operators. Board members agreed to reference FAA supervision rather than inserting a potentially conflicting local age restriction; the policy will reference FAA guidance in its legal references. The board approved the second reading with that addition and no recorded opposition.
The policy clarifies that unmanned aircraft systems used for STEM classes, after-school clubs or other district activities must conform to FAA rules and, when students are involved, must be supervised by an FAA-certified pilot unless otherwise specified by law.
