Adaptive Surf Project donates beach access equipment; event set for Oct. 5

Luke Sharp, director of Adaptive Surf Project, told the Town of Atlantic Beach council on Sept. 9 that the organization donated an access mat and an all-terrain beach wheelchair to improve access to the beach for people with disabilities.
"This community believes in accessibility and it believes that beaches are for everyone," Sharp said. He explained the mat lets people using mobility devices roll onto the beach and the donated wheelchair helps users get from the mat into the surf. Sharp said the equipment was obtained through a Craig H. Neilsen Foundation grant.
Sharp also announced that Adaptive Surf Project will hold an event in Atlantic Beach on Oct. 5 expected to bring about 60–70 participants with disabilities and as many as 140 volunteers from across the East Coast.
The town presented a certificate of appreciation to Adaptive Surf Project at the meeting. Mayor Jake Evans and Interim Town Manager Orton Bellamy joined in thanking the group for the donation and the upcoming event.
The event is listed in the town’s upcoming activities and will require volunteer coordination and logistical support on the beach access where the matting and equipment will be used.
