Batesburg-Leesville approves $18,708 town share for new fire extrication equipment

At the June 9 meeting the Batesburg-Leesville Town Council approved staff’s recommendation to fund $18,708 from the town’s fire department capital line/fund balance to complete purchase of a hydraulic extrication tool set (commonly called the "jaws of life").
Staff told council the equipment’s typical list price is about $55,000 but, after a negotiated discount tied to a change order with another department, the vendor price is $42,678. The department will apply $3,970 from a truck purchase, volunteers have pledged $5,000, and the House of Rayford committed $15,000, leaving $18,708 requested from the town.
Council members raised questions about the number and size of off-budget appropriations for police and fire this fiscal year and the equity of funding between public-safety and public-works departments. Council voted by recorded district tally to approve the appropriation.
The equipment purchase and funding breakdown will be recorded in capital accounting and reflected in the fire department’s capital project ledger.
