The Houghton Lake Community Schools Board of Education voted 4-0 on Oct. 20 to expel Student #2025-26-01 from school for 180 days following a closed-session discipline hearing.
Board member Christian moved to expel the student, and board member Oster supported the motion; the roll call vote was unanimous. The board directed the administration to provide the student with access to his education and to regular counseling. Reinstatement for the 2026 school year is contingent on the student completing regular counseling and a psychological evaluation through Bridges of Northern Michigan.
Earlier in the meeting, the board appointed Superintendent Williams as Discipline Hearing Officer (motion by Paula Whittington, supported by Oster; vote 4-0) and moved into a closed session under Michigan's Open Meetings Act Section 8(b) to hear the student-discipline matter. The board returned to open session at 7:09 p.m. and subsequently approved the closed-session minutes (motion by Christian, supported by Oster; vote 4-0).
No public comments were received at the meeting. The special meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
