Atlantic Beach council approves mutual-aid agreements, updates court account signatures and confirms history-committee appointments

At its Jan. 6 meeting the Town of Atlantic Beach council approved a pair of mutual-aid agreements with neighboring police departments, amended signatures on the municipal court bank account and confirmed several appointments to the History Committee.
Mayor Pro Tem John David introduced Resolution No. 1-2025, describing it as "an agreement between the Town of Atlantic Beach and the City of North Myrtle Beach" to provide mutual law-enforcement aid during national disasters, civil disorder, special events and emergency situations. Interim Town Manager Linda Cheatham told the council the City of North Myrtle Beach previously adopted the same resolution and had requested Atlantic Beach do likewise. "They would request our assistance as we would request theirs," Cheatham said. Councilman Edward Campbell moved to approve; Councilwoman Carla Taylor seconded. A roll-call vote recorded Campbell, Taylor and David as voting in favor.
The council then approved a memorandum of understanding with the City of Myrtle Beach Police Department that staff described as "a similar agreement" under the same circumstances.
Council also passed Resolution No. 2-2025 to change signatures on the Town's municipal court bank account from the retired judge to Judge Angela Mary Brown after the bank requested the update, again approving the measure by roll call.
On appointments, Mayor Pro Tem David recognized the work of the Atlantic Beach History Committee and noted the town's recent National Register nomination approval by the state in November. The council unanimously appointed Dr. Rosa Rucker Lightfoot, Pat Mallett, Helen M. Pierce and Alice Adderton Graham (named Town Archivist and committee chair), and Matthew J. Bailey (Town Photo Archivist). The council also named John Skeeter Historian Emeritus.
All of the listed measures were approved after motions and roll-call votes. The meeting record shows the council conducted the votes after public and staff explanations, with no recorded no-votes or abstentions on these items. The council adjourned at about 6:48 p.m.
What happens next: the mutual-aid agreements and the signature-change resolution are final as adopted; appointments will be recorded with the clerk and the town will proceed with the History Committee's digitization and archive projects described during the meeting.
