Plympton Council on Aging board approves minutes, reviews Friends funds and programs; MedBus driver to resign

The Plympton Council on Aging Board met on Jan. 13, 2026, and approved the minutes from its Dec. 9 meeting. Chair Nancy Butler called the meeting to order at 10:40 a.m., and six board members and two staff members were recorded as present.
Friends of the Council of Aging President Cindy Bloomquist reported the Friends treasury balance at $6,758.80, noting $255 raised at the Christmas-luncheon raffle plus a $100 donation. Bloomquist reminded seniors that the Friends will reimburse snow-removal expenses with an invoice: $40 for plowing and $25 for shoveling; reimbursements for handyman work tied to safety issues will be determined later.
At the business report, staff member Jean Pacheco said warrants for December totaled $310.18 and that the pantry served 16 people in nine households during December.
Deb Batson, the board’s representative to the Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) board, said OCES is a private nonprofit and will meet next in Brockton; she reported that OCES has opened an office in Plympton near the center lights and that financial-assistance services are available to qualifying seniors on request.
Director Colleen Thompson said supermarket gift cards are available through the COA. Thompson also reported that MedBus driver Denis Dries intends to submit his resignation effective Feb. 1, 2026, though he may extend service through April if needed. The board discussed revisiting use of the regional GATRA bus for some trips and asked staff to check whether the town could be reimbursed by GATRA for town-provided rides.
Looking ahead, Thompson announced a falls-prevention presentation by physical therapist Kelly Blevins on Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Deborah Sampson room at the Town House. The board confirmed a Feb. 4 luncheon (soups and sandwiches) at the Plympton Congregational Church with music by acoustic guitarist Chris Carter; board members and COA volunteers will prepare food. Members also discussed possible future speakers and entertainers, including the American Band Wooden Project, singer Laura James, a talk called "Frankly Speaking" by Nancy Frank, and other programs such as funeral pre-planning and an OCES "Train Your Brain" session.
The board noted an August cookout at the Upland Club with entertainment by Bombshell Betty. The next COA meeting was set for Feb. 10, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. The meeting adjourned at 11:35 a.m.
