Medina departments report street work, emergency calls and police technology updates

Public works, the fire department and police updated the Medina Board of Mayor and Aldermen on operations and planned work during the Oct. 2 meeting.

Mike Hutcherson, Parks and Recreation/Public Works, told the board crews were finishing routine street maintenance and installing signage, with asphalt paving on Vista Drive projected to begin Friday per the contractor. He said a new playground and a pickleball court opened; the court will close temporarily for repairs.

Fire Chief Mark Cleveland reported 24 calls for the Medina department in September; the minutes state none were city fire calls. He also reported 14 county calls in the same period: 10 medical assists, 2 fire calls, 1 motor-vehicle call and 1 assist.

Building Inspector Matt Brown said one building permit and one plumbing permit were issued in September. He reported that Liberty Tobacco & Beer Store is opening in a new strip mall adjacent to the old skating rink building, that Circle K has pulled a permit application but has not completed required forms, and that a Chamber representative will speak with the property owner about potential franchise tenants. He said Casey will meet with the Tennessee Department of Transportation about turn-lane requirements.

Police Chief Phillip Kemper reported 5 arrests, 283 calls for service, 39 citations and 2,045 camera citations for September. He said one officer position is open and a new hire is scheduled to start Oct. 14. Kemper told the board the department has bought a new and a used vehicle; one is currently awaiting radio installation. He said Flock cameras are on a 90-day trial to determine optimal placement of four cameras in the city and that electronic tickets are scheduled to go into operation in October.

The meeting minutes note Recorder/Treasurer Kim Gilley was not present and that no citizens provided public comment.
