Medina aldermen approve minutes, set meeting changes; police, fire and public works give routine reports

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen of Medina approved two sets of minutes, adopted changes to the regular meeting calendar and heard routine departmental reports at its Sept. 8 meeting.
Motions and outcomes recorded in the minutes: the board approved the Aug. 7 minutes as written (motion by Alderman Kevin Painter, seconded by Alderman Angi Mathenia; motion passed 5-0). The board approved the Aug. 26 special meeting minutes (motion by Alderman Marc Murdaugh, seconded by Alderman Kevin Painter); the minutes record a 4-0 vote with one abstention for that approval. The board also approved the Sept. 8 agenda (motion by Painter) and later approved changing the Oct. 6 meeting to Thursday, Oct. 2 (motion by Painter, second by Andrew Rhodes); both motions passed 5-0.
Parks and public works: Mike Hutcherson reported the new playground is nearing completion and fall soccer and football seasons are starting. Street crews are repairing areas in the Arbor Oaks and Jabez neighborhoods. Hutcherson said he is awaiting Gibson Electric's assessment of options to improve crosswalk lighting near the school, and aldermen discussed a possible solar lighting solution; Painter asked that the Middle School crosswalk be repainted.
Fire department: Fire Chief Mark Cleveland reported 21 calls in August, including 15 medical calls, three lift assists, two false alarms and one motor vehicle crash. Cleveland said the department received a $10,000 State Farm Good Neighbor grant and that a CPR machine has been ordered with that funding.
Police: Assistant Chief Bannon reported two arrests, 405 calls for service, 78 citations and 1,170 camera citations for August. He said the department was awarded a THSO overtime grant of $25,248 to pay overtime for enforcement aimed at citations and arrests for DUI and traffic violations. Flock cameras are deployed in a 90-day test mode; the department will review placement and decide which four cameras remain after the pilot. Alderman Mathenia asked for K-9 arrest statistics; Bannon said he will provide those figures monthly.
Finance: Recorder/Treasurer Kim Gilley told the board the 2024-25 audit is complete.
The board had no additional reports and adjourned.
