Medina police chief reports full staffing, K-9 Axle certified; e-citations expected this fall

Police Chief Phillip Kemper reported monthly enforcement and staffing updates to the Medina board at its July 7 meeting. For June he recorded 3 arrests, 335 calls for service, 82 citations and 1,229 camera-ticket records. Kemper told the board the department is fully staffed and that newly acquired handguns, rifles and tasers will enter training starting the following day.
K-9 Axle has achieved certification and assisted Sgt. McMinn in two narcotics cases, the chief said; K-9 Raven is still in training. Kemper said he is developing a five-year strategic plan for the police department and will submit it to the board when complete. He also reported that the department expects to implement electronic citations (e-citations) in September or October.
Alderman Angi Mathenia noted she has observed more officers visible in neighborhoods and applauded that presence. Recorder/Treasurer Kim Gilley reported separately that the city’s July 4 fireworks went well and that the annual audit will begin the following week.
The chief did not present formal proposals or motions at the meeting; he framed the updates as operational and planned improvements.
