Medina aldermen extend pay for first responders, approve $7,000 vehicle; rezoning tabled

The Medina Board of Mayor and Aldermen on July 7 approved several routine and operational items, extended temporary pay for first responders and authorized a $7,000 purchase for a used first-responder vehicle funded from the Fire Department’s equipment budget. The board also tabled a rezoning request for a property on West Church Avenue pending additional materials from the applicant.
The meeting opened with a quorum present; Alderman Marc Murdaugh moved and Alderman Angi Mathenia seconded approval of the June 2 minutes, which passed 5-0. Alderman Kevin Painter moved to approve the July 7 agenda, with Alderman Drew Rhodes seconding; that motion also passed 5-0.
Fire Chief Mark Cleveland asked the board to extend pay for responders until full-time personnel are hired, citing recent responder staffing and coverage figures. Alderman Kevin Painter moved to extend the pay; Alderman Angi Mathenia seconded, and the motion passed 5-0.
The board separately approved a request to purchase a used first-responder vehicle with needed equipment for $7,000 to be paid from the department’s existing equipment budget. Alderman Drew Rhodes moved the purchase and Alderman Marc Murdaugh seconded; the vote was 5-0.
On land-use business the board heard a first-reading rezoning request for 357 West Church Ave (Tax Map 176, Parcel 002.00), where owner Clay Goodrich seeks to change zoning from B-1 (General Business) to R-2 (High Density Residential). The board asked Goodrich to provide a rendering of proposed duplexes and voted to table the rezoning until the next meeting; Alderman Angi Mathenia moved to table and Alderman Kevin Painter seconded. The motion passed 5-0.
On a separate land-use matter, the board approved on second reading a municipal zoning designation of R-1 (Low Density Residential) for approximately 122 acres of property being annexed (Tax Map 172, Parcels 7.00, 7.01, 11.01, 12.00, & 12.01). Mayor Betts moved the measure and Alderman Drew Rhodes seconded. The motion passed 4-0 with Alderman Kevin Painter recorded as abstaining.
Other routine items reported to the board: Parks and Recreation/Public Works director Mike Hutcherson and Building Inspector Matt Brown were noted absent; Recorder/Treasurer Kim Gilley reported that July 4 fireworks went smoothly and that the city audit will begin the following week.
The board adjourned after members reported no further business. The items the board tabled or directed for follow-up — notably the rezoning applicant renderings and attorney review of a beer-sale ordinance for an indoor-golf business — will return at a future meeting.
