Byron council adopts new fire-prevention code and imposes excise tax on rental vehicles

The City of Byron Mayor and Council on Sept. 14 unanimously adopted two ordinances on second reading: a comprehensive revision to the city's Fire Prevention and Protection Code and a new excise tax on rental motor vehicles.
Ordinance #2020-6 repeals the existing fire prevention code and substitutes a new code (sections 18-1 through 18-16) that the council said establishes procedures including appointment of a Fire Chief and Fire Marshal, sets fire limits, prescribes fire-prevention duties, and creates procedures for appeals and for specifying materials requiring permits. Rusty Adams moved to adopt the ordinance and James Richardson seconded; the measure passed unanimously.
Council also adopted Ordinance #2020-7 to impose an excise tax on rental motor vehicles. The motion to adopt was made by Chris Hodges and seconded by Alan Dorsey; the ordinance passed on second reading by unanimous vote.
Both ordinances are recorded in the city clerk's file at the Municipal Complex and the council package includes the full text and exhibits for each measure. The minutes show no dissent; council members voted unanimously on both items.
