Mulga council discusses potholes, streetlight requests and March 22 cleanup

Mulga Town Council members discussed a string of local infrastructure and public-safety issues at their Feb. 4 pre-council and regular meeting, agreeing to pursue grant funding for road repairs and scheduling a town cleanup for March 22.
Council members and residents told the mayor that several roads — including Railroad Avenue and Lakeshore Circle — need pothole patching. District 5 asked whether the town would seek outside funding; Mayor W. Keith Varner said the town will apply for grants to cover road repairs.
Council members also raised safety and maintenance concerns. District 1 noted that leaves have collected in the ditches along 4th Avenue and asked about trash blowing off nearby railroad tracks; Mayor Varner said that particular trash problem lies in neighboring Maytown and not in Mulga. District 4 asked why dumpsters remained in place; the mayor said the contractor had not yet removed them and announced the town will begin organizing cleanup meetings for March 22, with staging at Minor and at Town Hall. He also noted Jefferson County is hosting drop-off events for electronics, paper shredding and household hazardous waste.
Public-works updates included equipment and utility items: Mayor Varner reported that Gulf Coast completed a gas-leak survey and found two leaks, and that the shaft on a tap machine broke and the town is seeking a replacement. Jeremy Davis asked about procuring roll-off trailers for town use; Varner said staff member Ben will need to put out a bid to obtain them.
Residents and council members also expressed concern about lighting at the storm shelter. "It is really dark at the storm shelter," District 5 said; the mayor said the town has been reviewing locations for additional street lights.
The council approved the Jan. 21, 2025 minutes by roll call vote (District 1: Yes; District 2: Absent; District 3: Yes; District 4: Yes; District 5: Yes; Mayor: Yes). The meeting adjourned after a brief visitor comment and a motion to adjourn passed unanimously among those present.
What’s next: The town will pursue grant applications for road work, staff will advertise bids for equipment requests such as roll-off trailers, and cleanup planning will continue ahead of the March 22 event.
