Mulga council approves limited equipment rental and discusses trailers, limb pickup, flagpole and park needs

Councilmembers approved a short-term equipment rental authorization and discussed several town services and community projects at the Oct. 1, 2024 Mulga council meeting.
Mayor W. Keith Varner reported United Rental quoted a 120-foot boom (45,000 lb) at $4,355.06 per week and "about $10k" per month. Councilmember Lisa Armstrong moved to authorize up to $5,000 for rental of that boom for town water and gas operations; Rachel Davis seconded and the motion passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.
During pre-council, visitor Brenda Jordan asked about trailer pricing. Mayor Varner said roll-off dumpsters were priced at about $32,000, and trailers from vendors such as Best Trailer/Texas Pride were in a range of roughly $28,000 to $32,000 pending freight quotes. The mayor said freight cost was still being checked and that the town would be ready to finalize pricing once freight quotes arrive.
The mayor also announced a schedule change for garbage/limb collection: Mulga and the Bayview area will be added to the next billing-cycle limb pickup beginning Oct. 1, 2024.
Separately, the Board of Education has offered the town a 100-foot flagpole from the old Minor High School. Mayor Varner said the town will consider transporting, restoring and reinstalling the pole because of its sentimental value, and that the council will discuss the matter in a regular session for follow-up.
Other community items included District 4 requests to replace a walking-track flag and to add parking lines at the storm shelter, inquiries about bleachers for the ballpark, and District 5's request for two to three more garbage cans at the park. The mayor said the Post Office denied the town's ZIP-code change request and the town plans to appeal by filing a petition with the community. Town staff noted the ballfield is nearly ready but an easement is needed for splash-pad infrastructure and funds will be required to build bathrooms.
Council adjourned after routine district reports; minutes were attested by Town Clerk Tabitha Galloway.
