Mulga council approves $15,000 purchase of 1992 Pierce fire truck; fire department announces safety programs

The Mulga Town Council voted unanimously Jan. 21 to buy a used 1992 Pierce fire truck from neighboring Pleasant Grove for $15,000, Mayor W. Keith Varner said.
Mayor Varner recommended the purchase during the meeting at Mulga Town Hall, and Lisa Armstrong moved to approve it; Rachel Davis seconded the motion. The roll-call vote recorded 'Yes' from Districts 1–5 and the mayor.
The council discussed what to do with Mulga’s current fire truck; the mayor said it could "possibly be donated." The motion did not specify a timetable for delivery or decommissioning.
Fire department representative Jonathan Goodwin told the council the department will participate in the Turn Your Attention to Fire Prevention initiative by giving away free smoke detectors; homeowners receiving devices will be asked to sign waivers. He said the department also will offer free fire plans for commercial buildings within Mulga city limits and will test fire hydrants on March 15 and 16.
Goodwin reported the department purchased rescue tools through GovDeals.com for $5,120.75 and that uniforms will change from blue to gray at no cost to the town; he also said several new volunteers are joining the department.
The council took no separate action on the department’s programs beyond approving the truck purchase. No delivery date or funding source for the truck purchase beyond the approved motion was announced.
