Council discusses annexation options for Maytown; no vote taken

Mulga — The Mulga Town Council held an initial discussion about potential annexation of nearby Maytown on Sept. 17 but took no formal action, citing boundary and mapping issues.
Mayor W. Keith Varner told the council that Mulga's and Maytown's boundaries "do not touch," and county maps contain discrepancies that must be corrected before the town can move forward with annexation. He said staff are pursuing the quickest route to resolve mapping discrepancies and that Booker Heights has been informed of Mulga's vision for the area.
Resident Brenda Jordan asked whether Maytown must be dissolved to join Mulga. Town attorney Ben Goldman answered that the technical term is "consolidation." Mayor Varner added that some properties in the area are inside a fire district and that residents would need to pay six years of fire dues to be released from the district before annexation could proceed. Goldman stated that a petition to annex must come from an owner or an authorized agent and that the town has a form for petitions.
The council did not vote on annexation at the meeting. Mayor Varner said the town will pursue map corrections and next steps before bringing any formal proposal back to the council.
