Mulga council adopts updated technical building codes in unanimous vote

Mulga — The Mulga Town Council unanimously adopted Ordinance No. 2024-04 on Sept. 17, 2024, updating the town's technical building codes to the 2021 editions of the International Building Code, International Energy Conservation Code, International Residential Code, International Existing Building Code and the 2021 plumbing, mechanical and fuel-gas codes, and adopting the 2020 edition of the electrical code.
At a public hearing before the vote, town attorney Ben Goldman summarized the ordinance and confirmed notice had been posted; no members of the public spoke for or against the measure. Mayor W. Keith Varner opened the hearing and the council moved quickly from immediate consideration to adoption after motions by Council Member Lisa Armstrong and a second by Council Member Lelan Taylor.
The change is administrative and technical in nature: Goldman described it as adopting the specified model codes and versions the town proposes to enforce. Mayor Varner said permits tied to the newly adopted codes will be affected beginning Jan. 1, 2025.
