Nauvoo council OKs fire-department clothing and equipment, appoints elections manager and seeks $5,000 grant

Nauvoo — The Nauvoo Town Council on June 17 unanimously approved several routine but immediate actions, including spending for volunteer fire department apparel and equipment, formally naming the town clerk as elections manager for the 2025 municipal election and authorizing a grant application to buy security cameras and training equipment for the fire station.
Fire Chief Matt Sanford asked the council to approve clothing for department members so each volunteer would receive two T‑shirts and one collared shirt. The council suspended its rules for immediate consideration and authorized up to $2,500 for the purchase to be taken from the Nauvoo Volunteer Fire Department account.
Sanford then requested approval to buy a pre-con valve for the dump tank on Engine 5, estimating a cost of about $3,000. The council again suspended the rules and authorized the purchase for up to $3,000.
Mayor Terry Burgett presented Resolution No. 20250617 to appoint Nicole Garner, the town clerk, as elections manager and absentee elections manager for the 2025 municipal election because the mayor is a candidate in that election cycle. The council adopted the resolution by unanimous vote.
Mayor Burgett also asked the council to allow him to apply for a Walker Area Community Foundation grant of up to $5,000 (no local match required) to purchase additional security cameras for the fire department, community center and park, plus a TV and computer for fire station training. The council authorized the mayor to apply and sign required paperwork.
Other business included a mayoral request that council members consider renaming streets that branch off 2nd Avenue to avoid confusion and an announcement that Capstone's grand opening is set for July 18 at 2:00 p.m.; demolition of a church and school property could begin the following week. The council entered executive session at 5:39 p.m. to discuss possible litigation and reconvened to adjourn at 6:07 p.m.
