Cortney Dominianni elected board president; Lou Palma wins contested vice president race

Cortney Dominianni was elected president of the Union Township Board of Education at the reorganization meeting on Jan. 6, 2025, after a motion to nominate her was made and a roll-call vote was taken. The board secretary then turned the meeting over to Dominianni as the newly elected president.
The election process began with nominations from the floor. Amelia Lamonde moved to nominate Dominianni for president; hearing no other nominations, the board closed nominations and recorded a roll-call vote that resulted in Dominianni's election. The minutes record the motion and the board secretary's handover but do not attribute individual vote choices beyond the tallied result recorded in the roll call.
The vice president contest was more contested. Nominees included Caitlin Piontek, Lou Palma and Christine Robitaille. The board conducted sequential roll-call ballots for each nominee; after the ballots, Lou Palma was elected vice president. The minutes record the vote tallies across the nominee ballots and show Palma receiving the majority on the decisive ballot.
The leadership votes occurred at the start of the reorganization agenda and established who will preside over the board for the coming year. Those leadership roles are consequential because the president and vice president lead committee appointments and represent the district at county and state board association meetings.
The newly constituted leadership proceeded immediately into standard reorganization business, including a package of resolutions on policy, banking, and the meeting calendar (see separate article). The board adjourned the public meeting at 7:18 p.m.
Who acted and where: the meeting took place in the Union Township Elementary School library; the board secretary, Eva Preuett, administered the meeting proceedings and the Oath of Office to newly elected members before the leadership votes.
